10 TIPS TO LOOK SLIMMER
Although we may look in the mirror and not be too happy with what we see, there are various ways in which we can help ourselves using accessories, clothes and a bit of imagination. Here’s where to start…

- Keep it simple!
Although chunky necklaces amd large bags might be the latest fashion accessory of the season, know that wearing excess material, big buttons or large pockets actually add to the bulk of your frame. Unneccessary details interfere with the clean lines which are so slimming so steer clear of fuss by using colours to jazz up your outfit instead. - Use vertical lines
There’s no magic to this, just perspective; vertical patterns on fabrics draw the eye up and down the body thereby creating the impression of a slimmer figure. Horizontal lines should be avoided as much as possible, although if the stripes are narrow then they are much more forgiving – thick, wide stripes should be banned from your wardrobe. Wearing skinny scarves around the neck and down the body also serves to slim your frame by creating a vertical line. - Choose the right fabrics
Very thick fabrics add bulk while fabrics which are too clingy can be unforgiving. Try to find fabrics which provide structure and skim over problem areas rather than enhancing them. Use accessories such as scarves to hide a tummy, and empire line tops to balance out wide hips. - Wear structured and supportive underwear
What you wear under your clothes is as important as what you wear on the outside. Control pants, minimising bras, all-in-one shapers… these can all help to iron out any lumps and bumps and create a smooth shape. - Wear a slight heel
Heels add height and poise to a figure helping elongate the body and making you look and walk less frumpy. There are plenty of styles and heel heights out there so even if you’re not a fan of heels, you can always opt for a slight kitten heel which shouldn’t rock your balance. Avoid heels and styles that are too chunky and steer clear of square-toe or excessively rounded styles – a tapered toe will elongate the foot making it look slimmer. - Use colour wisely
Colour is just as important as style, so although you might find a top in a flattering style, if the colour doesn’t suit your complexion, don’t buy it! Darker colours make the body look slimmer however this doesn’t mean that you should deck yourself out in black from head to toe. Wear a darker colour on the area of your body that you want to minimize and enhance your best assets with brighter colours. If you do wear dark colours throughout, give yourself a boost of colour with a simple scarf or necklace. - Scale the print size
Tiny prints emphasise a fuller figure as do patterns of contrasting colours. Opt for subtle patterns of an appropriate scale for your figure and, as mentioned earlier, avoid wide horizontal lines as well as very busy, swirly or rounded patterns. - Have a slimming hairstyle
Your hair is one of your most noticeable features so make sure that the cut and style flatters your face. Although you may like the way a hairstyle looks on a friend/celebrity it may not work for your face shape so ask your hairdresser for advice. Keep your locks in good condition to always have them looking their best. - Have good posture
This doesn’t require new clothes or different hairstyles, just a bit of effort and remembering from your part. Stand tall, pull your shoulders back and lift your head up to lose instant pounds! - Wear the right size!
Don’t be tempted to buy an item because of its size label – remember that labels are on the inside of your clothes and if they really bother you, just cut them off! Wearing clothes that are too small will only draw attention to the areas that you want to minimize as they will pull and stretch over any imperfections. Wearing clothes that are too large for you is also a bad thing as you will lose any shape that you have and end up looking bulky rather than streamlined. Stick to your size and don’t be afraid to buy different sizes in different shops or for different styles of clothes.
