Located inside a wooden schooner, The Black Pearl restaurant offers al fresco dining under the stars on the extended terrace in summer where one may enjoy panoramic views of Msida Creek, Marsamxett Harbour and Sliema. In winter the venue is transformed into a cosy hub and dinner is served inside the cabin which overlooks the Ta’ Xbiex Marina where a cosy ambience is created using heaters and warmer furnishings.
With its sense of adventure and romance, a meal at The Black Pearl is an experience in itself. The restaurant specialises in fish dishes; however pasta and meat dishes can also be found on the menu. Restaurant manager Arthur Grech recommends the daily freshly-caught fish which are bought directly from fishermen.
The Fritto Misto, which includes calamari, whitebait, a king prawn and a piece of steak fish, was cooked to perfection. The Angus beef carpaccio was tender, perfectly sliced and the ideal dish for a hot summer night.
A choice of fresh fish is on display and this can be cooked in a versatile way; we tried a salt-encrusted acciola and a denci
al cartoccio, which both tasted and smelt as fresh as the sea and didn’t require any seasoning. The white Planeta Alastro wine really set off the flavour of the fish and the taste of the vegetables that accompanied the dishes.
The best part of the meal was the chocolate fondant served with fig ice-cream and fruit which leaves you with a burst of flavours that remind me of Christmas and summer freshness rolled into one.
In the past The Black Pearl was known as an expensive restaurant; however it is now running under new management and offers excellent value for money. I made a mental note to come around in winter and sit inside the cabin, where I can watch the candlelight flicker against the perfectly restored timber and enjoy the intimate atmosphere that this place has to offer.
